It is not clear how Hugo came into Bruno's life. Actually, he is rather a friend of his best friend Elmar, the Elk. When you believe what Elmar tells Bruno, he met Hugo because he was given to him as talisman at new year's eve. That's why we at least know the day of Hugo's birthday: The 31st of December. The year is still unclear.
